How to create question categories
Q) How do I create a question category in Blackboard?
A) Probably the easiest way to organize your quiz (assessment) is to have a separate category for each question set. This will allow you to choose the question sets quicker and it should make it easier to manage them.
To create your category(ies):
- Go to the Build tab then Assessments.
- Click on Go to Questions Database.
- Click on the Create category button then type in a category title.
- Click on Save.
Now that your category is created, either add another category, or add questions to it.
How to create your new questions
Q) How do I create quiz (assessment) questions in Blackboard?
A) Now that your have your Categories created, you need to add questions to them.
If you are on the Build tab, Assessments click Create Questions.
- From the Type drop-down box, choose the type of question that you want.
You should now be looking at a blank question form. To fill out the form:
- Enter the question's Title.
Note: This field isn't displayed on the quiz by default, so I would suggest that you put a number in this name to differentiate between your possible questions.
- Enter your Question.
- If you are using HTML in your Question, make sure that you choose the HTML radio button.
- If you want an image associated with this question, click Browse and upload an image.
- Fill out the Answer settings as needed for each type of question.
- If you need more then five answers, click the Create Additional Answers button.
- Click the icon to expand *More Options.
- Select the category the question is to go into by using the drop down arrow next to Specify an existing category:
- When you are done creating this Question, click on the Save button at the bottom.
Now that you have some questions, you can either Create a Quiz or duplicate your questions.
How to duplicate your questions
Q) I want to use a question I already created, just change some information. How do I do this?
A) Sometimes it's a lot easier to duplicate and change a question then to recreate the question. To do this:
- Go to the Questions Database.
- View the category that this question is in.
- Click on the Question's Title on the left.
- Modify the question.
- Click the Save as new button when you are finished and it will create a new question.
How to create your quiz
Q) Now that I have created the categories and the questions, how do I create my quiz (assessment)?
A) To create your quiz (assessment), you will need to have created some questions and organized them into the question categories.
If you are on the Build tab, Assessments click Create Assessment.
- On the new screen:
- Type in a Title for your quiz (assessment) (this is the title that the student's click on).
- Select Quiz for the Type.
- If you have an existing Quiz (assessment) that you want to copy select that option under Template otherwise accept the default.
- Click Save or Save and Add Questions.
How to change your quiz settings
Q) How do I change the settings on my quiz (assessment)?
A) There are a few options that you can change to make a quiz (assessment) more secure. You should change the following quiz (assessment) settings. To do this:
- Go to the Build tab then Assessments.
- Find the Assessment you want to change.
- Click the ActionLinks icon at the end of the title.
- Select Edit Properties.
- Change your settings as needed. For a more secure test, it's recommended that you set/unset the following options:
- Set - "Deliver one question at a time, where students must answer or skip each question to proceed. Once a question has been answered or skipped it cannot be revisited."
- Set - The number of minutes the test can be taken.
- Set - "Release the score once the quiz has been submitted and all the questions have been graded."
- Click the icon to expand Dates Available.
- Set the Open and Close dates for the assessment.
- Set - Show the evaluation of the student's response only.
- Unset - Show the full evaluation of each question.
- Unset - Show the correct answer for each question.
Now that your quiz is configured, and if you have not already you should add questions to it.
How to add your questions to your quiz
Q) Now that I have done all of this work, how do I add questions to my quiz (assessment)?
A) To add questions to your quiz (assessment) you need to click on the quiz's (assessment) title on the Quiz and Survey Management page.
- Click on the Title.
- Click on the Add to Assessment button.
- Select Existing Questions.
- Choose all of the questions that you want to be "alternatives" (the actual question displayed will be chosen from this list when the quiz(assessment) is displayed) by checking on the checkbox to their left.
- Once all of your questions are chosen, click the Add Selected button.
Now that you have your set selected:
- Fill in the Points that these questions are worth.
- To add Question Alternates:
- Check the box beside the question that you want to have alternates.
- Click Add Question Alternates button.
- Check the box beside all of the questions that are an alternate for this question.
- Click Add Selected.
- Choose the number of questions to be chosen from this set in the Select field.
- Click on the Update Total button to save the questions.
